Wake up with the Birds

kingfisherA must for all bird watching enthusiasts, but also a wonderful morning for non-birdwatchers.
An early start before daybreak with a drive by minibus to Makasutu Cultural Forest arriving at first light at the idyllic base camp. This site is situated on the bed of the meandering Mandina Bolong (river), a tributary of The River Gambia, where, after tea or coffee, you will set off to explore the forest on foot and into the creeks in a traditional African ‘dug out’ canoe for a totally different experience of the dawn and accompanying chorus.
The forest and creeks alike are a haven for birds of all types and the early start really is the best way to experience the dawn chorus in all its splendour. Natural hides and observation platforms are provided near water holes where the birds and wildlife are in abundance.

During your trip, it is possible to spot many different birds, including some rare species, such as the White Backed Night Heron, Giant Kingfisher and the African Fin Foot, to name a few. There are many different habitats where it is possible to spot birds, including the gallery forest, palm forest, savannah, salt flats and mangroves. As well as the birds you may get a glimpse of the local baboons, mongoose, civets, genets, crocodiles and the rare clawless otter.
Breakfast is a lavish, full cooked affair prepared by the chefs from Mandina River Lodge.
Transport arrives back at the hotel in plenty of time for lunch. Binoculars and copies of "Birds of The Gambia and Senegal" by Barlow, Wacher & Disley are available on loan free of charge, your guide will assist with this.
